Continuing the investigation of contemporary sociological strands that consider the narrative character of the making of society, the article puts into perspective Klaus Eder's theoretical reflections on “social learning” in dialog and contrast with those of Jeffrey C. Alexander on “performances”. The dialog proves fruitful both because of their interest in the theoretical differentiation between culture and society, and because of the broader contrasting visions they develop about social order and change. Contrary to what one might imagine, in principle, neither “social learning” directly produces change, nor does “performance” definitively guarantee order. Communicational contingencies between society and culture must be taken seriously in theorizing.
