Roger Bastide’s intervention at the First Brazilian Congress of Sociology, in 1954, draws up a synthesis, grouped into four topics, on the most urgent problems involved in the development of sociological research in Brazil at that time. His reflexive contribution has the merit, despite the well-known asymmetries, of not losing sight of Brazil’s place in an expanded comparative framework. Its capacity to identify the obstacles of the time, as well as its “practical contributions” to overcome them, make Bastide’s paper a document that should always be read and re-read.
