Abstract

The notion of field was gradually developed by Pierre Bourdieu, firstly based on research on intellectuals, writers and the scientific world, as well as thanks to rereadings of Max Weber, in particular on religions. To think in terms of field is first to think relationally, and to think of power relations and relationships of struggle and domination. This text does not attempt to define field, but rather to evoke, even if in a somewhat subjective way, some important and central points of this theory that Bourdieu was developing. It also raises some questions about the sometimes abusive use of the notion of field in order to call for vigilance in its use.
