Abstract

Conjunctural analysis is well-tested genre in Brazil. Its theoretical antecedents in Marxism are no longer known. This article revisits the genealogy of the concepts of crisis and conjuncture against the background of the crises and metamorphoses of contemporary sociology. The article presents a critical realist analysis of critical conjunctures, understood as the conjunction of generative causal mechanisms that produce a crisis. The crisis is not only an event; it is also a process and a product of the coming together of structural contradiction and social conflicts at a particular moment in time that may be decisive.
