The article investigates the intersection between social space, symbolic space and geographical space in the cities of São Paulo and Barcelona. Empirically, it takes schooling as the central element of the symbolic space, with special emphasis on the upper classes in social space. Based on the analysis of data of the two cities and their respective educational systems, it explores the phenomenon of “international education” to capture the dynamics of upper classes (self)aggregation and segregation in certain areas, operating methodologically on the level of districts in both cities. Besides pointing out the existence of insular spaces in very different contexts, with different levels of inequality, the work contributes to the understanding of the formation of social boundaries and insularity.
