Abstract

The article discusses the participation of intellectuals in the debate about the transformations taking place internationally in higher education, specifically in universities. The work highlights the formation of a transnational higher education space that constitutes the scenario within which two types of intellectuals take a stand. It focuses on the participation of a group of intellectuals who present themselves as specialists in issues related to international higher education, referred to in this article as experts. Their analyzes tend to support a greater interaction between universities and the economic field. The article also discusses the performance of a second group of intellectuals who take a critical stand both in relation to the trends in the transformation of universities and in relation to the analyzes carried out by the experts. This second group is referred to here as collective intellectual. The work emphasizes that the central issue of this debate rests on the institutional independence of the university and the critical autonomy of intellectuals.
